Nana Carillo - Keep Your Pastel Palette Clean
One tip, which has been really helpful in my pastel work, is to keep a pan of cornmeal nearby to place the pastels in that you are using on a painting. The cornmeal cleans the pastel sticks really well, removes the dark dust, and is a place to collect the specific colors used for the art you are working on. Both yellow and white cornmeal work well. I learned this tip from my first pastel instructor, Loretta Feeback of Kansas City.
